How to Use a Makeup Sponge

Some of you may have seen one of these colored, egg-shaped makeup applicators and wondered, "What in the world am I supposed to do with this?" But, we venture to guess that most of you probably already have a few in your makeup kit right now, stained with foundation. And while makeup brushes will always be all-stars in our makeup game, our MVP of late has been the makeup sponge. Not only does it take all the guesswork out of your morning beauty routine, but it also makes blending everything a breeze, if you're using it right, of course!

Size & Shape Matter

The size and shape of makeup sponges vary, depending on what they're being used for. Larger, rounded sponges are used for the application of tinted moisturizer, BB or CC cream, foundation and even cream blush. Smaller, more precise designs are typically used for the under eye area and to conceal blemishes.

How to Use a Makeup Sponge

Guide to Makeup Sponge

Step 1. Before you begin your makeup application, wet the sponge until it’s completely saturated and squeeze out any excess water.

Step 2. Pour a small amount of liquid foundation onto the back of your hand, dip the rounded end of your sponge into the makeup, and begin applying to your face. Do not rub or drag the sponge across your skin.  Instead, gently dab or blot the area until your foundation is completely blended. Use the same dabbing technique when applying concealer underneath your eyes and cream blush to your cheeks. You can also use your sponge for blending contouring products and highlighter.

How to Keep a Makeup Sponge Clean

There are special cleansers created for makeup sponges, but mild soap will also do the trick! Run your makeup sponge under warm water while adding a few drops of soap (or even baby shampoo) and massage out the stains until your water runs clear. Roll it onto a clean towel to remove any moisture, and lay it flat on the towel to dry. Do this once a week and be sure to replace your sponge every couple of months (depending on frequency of use).
